The M5071A Philips HeartStart OnSite single-use pads need to be replaced after being used and when they expire.

1.       Locate the latch at the top edge of the HeartStart HS1 defibrillator and slide it to the side. The M5071A Smart pads cartridge will release. Lift out the used pads cartridge.

2.       Remove the new M5071A defibrillation pads cartridge from its package and insert the cartridge into the Philips HeartStart HS1 depression where the old M5071A pads were on the front of the HeartStart. If done properly it should click when it is properly seated. When the HS1 pad is properly seated the green PULL handle should be all the way down.

NOTE: Do not pull the M5071A pads cartridge cover off as this will dry out the adhesive. Removal of the M5071A Pads cover should only be done when the AED is being deployed in an emergency.

3.       Inspect  your 68 PCHAT  fast response kit supplied with your Philips HeartStart defibrillator to make sure your cpr mask and gloves are in good condition as they  breakdown and expire over the years.

In the past only EMS were allowed to use a defibrillator because most defibrillators were manual and did not automatically diagnose whether a shock was needed and what was the appropriate dose of energy.

In the early 70s the victim had to be transported to a hospital before the initial shock could be delivered. Over the years programs were developed in large communities to act as an extension of the hospital emergency room. EMS professionals went through training to learn how to treat SCA. In 1990 fewer than half of the ambulances in the United States carried a defibrillator, so the chance of surviving SCA outside the hospital or in small communities was still very small. Since then nearly every ambulance carries an aed machine and the development of the automated external defibrillators (AEDS) made it possible for the first responders, business owners, or even family members at the scene to treat SCA with the easy to use AEDS.  What this means is that with more rapid deployment of a portable defibrillator and CPR nearly 40,000 more lives could be saved each year.
